Newkeepers to Wiltshire Horns

The Wiltshire Horn is a large breed and we have found the best way of handling them is to use a sheep ‘deckchair’. This is exactly what it is with a few modifications. We find this is the best and easiest way and we have tried all sorts of methods, from sheep whispering to wrestling! It is very comfortable for the sheep and means that you have time with both hands free to work. You can also do a thorough examination of those areas not normally visible.

Everybody involved with sheep will tell you one thing, feet, feet, feet or to be technical hoof, hoof, hoof. If sheep have one weakness this is it. You must get to know the signs of common foot problems, be able to recognise them and have an understanding of what treatments are needed. It is important that you get instruction in foot care, and know how to trim their hooves without causing them discomfort.

For our customers, we offer short courses including practical demonstrations in sheep handling, foot trimming, treatments and general care. When we sell our family units we like to know that those who are going to care for them are able to do so properly. As snoopy once said, “Ten minutes before the party is not the time to learn to dance.” For further information please phone or email us.
