The Wellworthy flock is based in Cornwall in the Tamar Valley, where we enjoy a sheep friendly climate, which means good grass and plenty of it. Our sheep are reared totally outdoors on pasture free of artificial pesticides and fertilizers, keeping them resilient to common illnesses and reducing the need for regular antibiotics. It is our aim to attain the highest level of quality and conformation in our flock for future breeding. The flock is split into two family groups which provide us with the stock needed to supply starter family groups. Our family units remain together for most of the year, removing the ram in late August and returning him to his ewes in November for tupping, he will then remain with his ewes until August the following year. We prefer our sheep to remain in their family units as it is clear that they recognise and form attachments to one another, and if you have ever had any dealings with a ram you will know that he prefers to be with his ewes, than on his own in some remote field. This is the perfect breed for those new to sheep as they are easy to keep and require less husbandry. For the commercial breeder the benefits are in the reduced costs of keeping the breed compared to others. |
